Kyle Friend is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Washington and Lee University (W&L). His research focuses on gene regulation during stem cell differentiation into neurons and heart cells using cell biology, biochemistry, and computational methodologies.
His work extends into the chemical mechanisms governing stem cell specialization into tissues like nerves and cardiac muscles. The Jeffress Trust grant of $100,000 will support both experimental needs and undergraduate research opportunities at W&L.
Education: B.S. in Biochemistry from Ohio State University (2000), NIH Post-baccalaureate IRTA (2001), Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University (2001-07), with postdoctoral research at Yale and University of Wisconsin.
