Kurt Weyland is the Mike Hogg Professor in Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin (UT), specializing in democratization, authoritarianism, social policy, and populism across Latin America and Europe. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University, following an M.A. from UT and a Staatsexamen from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. After teaching at Vanderbilt University for a decade, he joined UT in 2001.
- Research integrates cognitive psychology and fieldwork in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, and Venezuela.
- Received research grants from the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
- Served as Associate Editor of the Latin American Research Review (2001–2004) and authored/co-edited 12 major works.
His recent work examines populism’s threat to democracy, policy diffusion, and hybrid regimes. He teaches courses on Latin American international politics and American government.
