Kurt Bertels is a Postdoctoral researcher and saxophone instructor at LUCA School of Arts, specializing in historical saxophone performance and 19th-century music. He is an artistic researcher with a PhD from May 2020, focusing on the Brussels saxophone class and its repertoire. Bertels is an endorsing artist for Légère Reeds and a member of the Kugoni Trio, an ensemble dedicated to artistic exploration. His work bridges academic research and performance, emphasizing historically informed interpretations of early saxophone literature.
Research interests include 19th-century performance practices, the evolution of the saxophone, and the cultural context of Brussels’ musical heritage. He has delivered online lectures on topics such as historical saxophone techniques and the genesis of the first saxophone concerto. Bertels also composes and arranges music scores, including works for saxophone and piano, reflecting his commitment to expanding the instrument’s repertoire.
