Kumkum Sangari is the Vilas Professor of English and the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), affiliated with the College of Letters & Science. She holds positions in the English department and cross-listed roles with Literature and Cultural Theory Faculty, Rhetoric, Professional Writing, and Community Engagement programs. Sangari holds a PhD in Literature from the University of Leeds.
Her research focuses on intersections of gender, colonialism, and global cultural studies, with specializations in transnational fiction, South Asian studies, and feminist theory. Key themes include patriarchal structures, postcolonial modernity, and the politics of representation in art and literature.
Her publications span monographs, edited volumes, and critical essays, including foundational works like Recasting Women: Essays in Colonial History and analyses of contemporary art through collaborations with artists like Sheba Chhachhi and Nilima Sheikh. Recent work addresses environmental humanities, gendered ecologies, and transnational feminist critiques of globalization.
