Nevine El-Nossery is an Associate Professor of French in the Department of French and Italian at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She holds a PhD from Université de Montréal and specializes in Francophone Studies (North Africa/France), postcolonial theory, art-politics intersections, women’s writing, and Middle Eastern cultural studies. Her work bridges literary analysis with visual arts, focusing on how marginalized voices challenge colonial and patriarchal structures.
Her research explores topics such as revolutionary art activism, gendered representations in postcolonial literature, and transnational cultural memory. Recent publications include Women, Art, and Revolutions (2013) and co-edited volumes on decolonial alternatives and Egyptian cultural production. She has received prestigious grants including the Vilas Fellowship and NEH Summer Institute funding.
El-Nossery’s creative work includes the documentary She Was at Tahrir Square, profiling Egyptian women’s political engagement during the 2011 revolution. Awards include the UW Honored Instructor Award (2017) and fellowships at the Institute for Research in the Humanities (2010).
