Kumar Rajaram is a Professor of Decisions, Operations and Technology Management at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, holding the William E. Leonhard Chair in Management. He specializes in developing analytical models to optimize operations across diverse sectors, including healthcare, process manufacturing, retail, and nonprofits.
Education:
- Ph.D., Operations Management (1998), Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
- M.A., Managerial Science and Applied Economics (1997), Wharton School
- M.S., Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (1993), University of Massachusetts at Amherst
- M.Sc., Mathematics (1991), Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India
- B.E., Electrical and Electronics Engineering (1991), Birla Institute
Rajaram's research interests span operations management, process improvement, and supply chain optimization. His work addresses challenges in healthcare systems (e.g., HIV/AIDS planning, patient flow), fashion retail (e.g., demand uncertainty), and industrial processes (e.g., Robust Process Control, which quadrupled productivity in global companies). He also explores machine learning applications in clinical decision support and water reservoir management under climate uncertainty.
Selected Trends in Publications: Recent articles focus on stochastic optimization for hospital staffing, machine learning for hospital readmissions, production planning in process industries, and supply chain compliance. Earlier works established frameworks for retail space allocation, elective patient scheduling, and theme park operations.
Scientific Recognition:
- Eric and E Juline Faculty Excellence in Research Award (2003), UCLA Anderson
- Franz Edelman Laureate (1998), INFORMS
- Best Application Paper, Institute of Industrial Engineers (2010)
- Deloitte Consulting Award for Field Study Achievement (2009)
- Niedorf 'Decade' Teaching Award (2005), UCLA Anderson
- Citibank Teaching Award (2000), UCLA Anderson
Advising & Implementation: His work has been applied at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Veterans Health Administration, and global process manufacturing firms. He co-developed a water reservoir management tool addressing climate uncertainty and designed executive education courses on operations for the UCLA-NUS EMBA Program.
Labs & Collaborations: Rajaram collaborates with interdisciplinary teams at UCLA Anderson Centers, including Healthcare, Supply Chain, and Technology Management, and with institutions like the Operational Research Society of the UK.
