Kristy vanMarle serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Missouri, based in McAlester Hall (218 McAlester Hall). She directs the Developmental Cognition Lab, which investigates foundational cognitive processes in early human development.
Her research centers on how infants and young children acquire understanding of quantitative dimensions—specifically number, time, and space. She examines the mechanisms underlying early quantity representation and how these primitive cognitive systems evolve into uniquely human capabilities like verbal counting. This work bridges developmental psychology and cognitive science to map the trajectory of quantitative reasoning from infancy.
The Developmental Cognition Lab (100 McAlester Hall) employs experimental methodologies to document infants' knowledge of their physical environment and its transformation through developmental milestones. Their research emphasizes the interplay between innate cognitive structures and experiential learning in shaping quantitative cognition.
