Associate Professor Kristine McGrath is affiliated with the University of Technology Sydney’s School of Life Sciences, within the Faculty of Science. She holds leadership roles as Program Director of Biotechnology programs and Chair of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Her research focuses on cardiovascular and endocrine diseases, including therapeutic targets for atherosclerosis, heart failure, and preeclampsia, with recent expansions into air pollution’s impact on dementia and cardiovascular health. She employs innovative 3D bioprinting and cell culture techniques. McGrath has a PhD from the University of Sydney and completed postdoctoral work at the Heart Research Institute. She is a recipient of the CSANZ Ralph Reader Prize for her PhD work.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biochemistry, University of Western Australia
- PhD in Molecular Pathways of Androgen Action in Cardiovascular Systems, University of Sydney
Research Interests: Cardiovascular disease mechanisms, endocrine regulation, inflammatory pathways, 3D modeling of placental and cardiac tissues, and environmental health impacts on cardiovascular systems. She explores therapeutic strategies using anti-inflammatory agents and nanotechnology-based interventions.
Grants & Collaborations: McGrath leads funded projects on biomaterials for stents, anti-inflammatory drug combinations, and placental models for preeclampsia. She collaborates with industry partners like Insitugen Limited and Plasmaide Global Pty Ltd.
Labs & Teams: Active member of UTS’ Climate Change & Health Research Collaborative and Women & Children’s Health Research Collaborative. Engages in interdisciplinary projects combining biotechnology and clinical research.
