Kristina Kolbe is an Assistant Professor in Sociology of Arts and Culture at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, Department of Arts and Culture Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam. She previously held a postdoctoral position at the University of Amsterdam and earned her PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her academic work bridges sociology, cultural studies, and critical race and gender theory.
Her research centers on intersectional inequalities of race, class, and gender as they manifest in cultural discourses, media representations, creative labor, and cultural production. She has a particular focus on music, especially classical music, and its relationship to urban multiculture and diversity initiatives. Her work critically examines how diversity and inclusion policies in the cultural industries may reproduce existing power structures.
Her recent publications include the 2024 monograph The Sound of Difference: Race, Class and the Politics of Diversity in Classical Music (Manchester University Press) and several high-impact journal articles in Cultural Sociology, Poetics, and Socio-Economic Review. Her research output reveals a strong thematic focus on the politics of cultural production, the sociology of music, and institutional responses to inequality. She frequently collaborates with scholars across Europe and contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues on justice and equity.
She has received multiple honors and competitive awards, including:
- NWO Veni Grant (2023)
- Early Career Fellowship (2023)
- CUS SAGE PRIZE (2022)
- Marshall Institute small grant funding (2019)
- Visiting Research Fellow (2024)
Kristina is actively engaged in academic service, including editorial work for journals such as Sociology Compass and Leisure Studies, organizing workshops, and public outreach through blogs (LSE Inequalities Blog) and podcasts (New Books Network). She is involved in research clusters such as MICS (Music, Industry, Culture, Society) and PCI (Popular Culture and Inequalities), and her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to reduced inequalities and social justice.
