Kristin Kanthak

Kristin Kanthak is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and the Gender, Sexuality, & Women's Studies Program. She holds a PhD from the University of Iowa (2000). Her research focuses on legislative politics, diversity in politics, experimental methods, and American political institutions, with particular attention to gender representation and electoral behavior.

Her academic career includes teaching courses such as the American Political Process, Legislative Process, and Politics of Diversity. Her research has explored topics like candidate entry decisions, gender dynamics in elections, and the organizational foundations of political representation. Her work often intersects with questions of institutional design and the role of political parties in shaping legislative behavior.

Kanthak’s recent scholarship includes analyses of editorial practices in academic publishing (2021), the impact of negative partisanship on trust in governance (2020), and the psychological barriers deterring women from political candidacy (2015). Her 2012 book The Diversity Paradox examines how political parties and legislatures navigate representation challenges in American democracy.
