Kristin Asdal is a Professor of Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Oslo’s Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture (TIK), where she also serves as Head of Department. She specializes in the sociology of knowledge, environmental politics, and valuation studies, focusing on how scientific expertise shapes democratic processes and economic practices. Her research bridges economics, natural science, and political theory, particularly in the context of environmental governance and the bioeconomy.
Key projects include the ERC-funded ValueThreads (2020-2027), examining new economic practices in sustainability transitions, and co-authoring the monograph Nature-Made Economy: Cod, Capital and the Great Economization of the Ocean (MIT Press, 2023). Asdal’s work also explores document analysis as a methodological tool, co-editing Doing Document Analysis: A Practice-Oriented Method (2022).
Her research interests include the politics of nature, climate change policy, and the intersection of science, technology, and democracy. She has held roles such as Vice-Chair of CICERO and contributes to journals like Distinktion. Asdal’s interdisciplinary approach integrates historical, sociological, and anthropological methods to analyze how knowledge practices influence economic and political systems.
