Kristiāna Ābele is the Director of the Institute of Art History at the Latvian Academy of Sciences (since 2022) and a leading researcher. She chairs the Doctoral Council (since 2022) and holds membership in the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Ābele edited and co-authored the multi-volume History of Latvian Art alongside Eduards Kļaviņš, contributing significantly to Volumes III and IV.
Her research examines 19th-20th century Latvian painting/graphics within Baltic-European contexts, art historiography, Baltic German heritage, and book history. She teaches History of Art History (BA) and Analytical Writing/Analysis of Scientific Texts (MA).
Ābele's scholarly output includes major monographs on artists (Krastiņš, Valters, Zeltiņš), edited collections like Personality in Art Processes, and approximately 50 articles. Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on reconstructing Latvian art narratives through rigorous archival analysis and contextual framing.
