Kristen Govoni is a Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Connecticut's College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR), where she also serves as Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Director of the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture. Dr. Govoni earned all her academic degrees from UConn: a BS in 1998, MS in 2002, and PhD in 2003 in Animal Science, followed by postdoctoral research at the Jerry L. Pettis VA Medical Center until 2008.
Her educational background includes:
- BS in Animal Science, University of Connecticut, 1998
- MS in Animal Science, University of Connecticut, 2002
- PhD in Animal Science, University of Connecticut, 2003
Dr. Govoni's research focuses on cellular-level growth and development mechanisms to improve animal health and production efficiency. She utilizes sheep models to investigate how maternal nutrition (including control, restricted, or over-feeding during gestation) affects offspring development across muscle, bone, and adipose tissue systems, while examining metabolic dysregulation in liver, muscle, and blood. Her laboratory employs integrated omics approaches to analyze molecular changes in mRNA expression, protein profiles, metabolites, and epigenetic regulation.
In December 2023, Dr. Govoni received the Excellence in Food and Agricultural Education award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and USDA. She actively participates in USDA-funded initiatives providing career opportunities and sponsoring CAHNR students at UConn Waterbury and Stamford campuses.
Dr. Govoni maintains research operations in the Agricultural Biotechnology Building (Room 317) while overseeing the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture's two-year associate degree programs. Her administrative leadership supports academic programming across CAHNR, including the May 2025 commencement celebrations.
