Kristen Coppin is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Hertfordshire, working within the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics in the School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science. She holds the prestigious position of Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellow and is affiliated with the Centre for Astrophysics Research (CAR).
Her research focuses on using sub-millimetre and infrared observatories to study dust-enshrouded high-redshift galaxies during a critical period of universal development when galaxies were forming most of their stars and black holes. She has been instrumental in major surveys including the SCUBA HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey, LABOCA ECDFS Submillimetre Survey, Herschel-ATLAS, SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey, and SCUBA-2 eXtremely Large Survey.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on galaxy formation and evolution, particularly examining star formation rates in extreme galaxies that produce stars at thousands of solar masses per year. Her work frequently employs cutting-edge technology like ALMA, SCUBA-2, and the James Webb Space Telescope to investigate high-redshift galaxy properties across multiple wavelengths.

Professor Coppin has led significant research projects including 'Star-forming radio galaxies: genesis, evolution, and impact' (2024-2029) and 'Star-forming in galaxies from the Epoch of Reionisation to the present day with JWST' (2021-2026). She chaired her School's Equality Committee from 2016-2019 and led successful Athena SWAN Silver and Juno Champion applications. Her current research explores the connection between star-formation and black hole growth in distant galaxies using multiple ground-based and space telescopes.
