Krista Brumley is a Professor of Sociology at Wayne State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, specializing in gender studies, work-family dynamics, and organizational sociology. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Tulane University (2004), an M.P.H. (1996), and an M.A. in Sociology (1998) from the same institution. Her research focuses on gender equity in the workplace, qualitative studies of Mexican organizations post-NAFTA, and the impact of work-family conflict on psychological well-being, particularly during the pandemic.
Brumley leads major NSF-funded initiatives, including the ADVANCE PARTNERSHIP (STEM Intersectional Equity) and the GEARS project (Gender Equity Advances Retention in STEM). Her work explores flexible work arrangements, ideal worker norms, and the mental load in household labor divisions. She has published in top journals like Society and Mental Health, Gender & Society, and Social Currents.
Her grants include a RAPID NSF award studying dual-income couples during the pandemic, yielding insights into work-family conflict and psychological distress. Brumley’s Mexican-focused research examines organizational change, NGOs, and gendered perceptions of opportunity in post-NAFTA Mexico. She also addresses intersectional equity in STEM departments through collaborative projects with Michigan State and Ohio State Universities.
Awarded the Career Development Chair (2019) and multiple Humanities Center Fellowships, Brumley teaches advanced research methods and sociology of gender. Her work bridges global and local contexts, emphasizing systemic equity and qualitative methodologies.
