He has been appointed Fellow at the Kiel Institute of the World Economy effective June 2025.
His academic credentials include a B.A. with highest honors (Phi Beta Kappa) and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Mitchener's research spans economic history, international economics, macroeconomics, and political economy, with groundbreaking work on financial crises, sovereign debt dynamics, and trade policy impacts. As a leading expert on historical banking panics, he examines how credit booms influence economic downturns and how financial networks amplify recessions. His book In Defense of Public Debt analyzes sovereign debt's dual role during crises like the global pandemic, while recent projects investigate trade war costs and monetary policy transmission mechanisms.
His publication record reveals strong interdisciplinary trends connecting historical analysis to contemporary policy challenges. Key research threads include financial crisis risk redistribution through banking networks, currency war impacts on trade flows, disinflation's effects on central bank finances, and the deep historical persistence of political phenomena like populism. This work consistently bridges quantitative historical methods with modern economic theory to address current financial stability and policy questions.

His research has received institutional support through competitive fellowships including the Hoover Fellowship and CASBS residency, enabling intensive scholarly work on financial crises and policy interventions.
His collaborative research approach involves extensive international partnerships, evident in co-authored projects with institutions like the Sveriges Riksbank and CEPR. Current work focuses on state-contingent bonds and risk transfer mechanisms during financial crises, often presented at central bank forums and academic conferences worldwide.
