Koubourlis Ioannis is an Assistant Professor of Historical Sociology of Modern Greek Society at the University of Crete, Department of Sociology, and a coordinator at Hellenic Open University's Public History Program. He specializes in historical sociology, national history writing, and political ideologies in the Balkans and Europe from the 18th to 20th centuries, with a focus on nationalism and socialism.

His research examines the formation of Greek national historiography, classical reception in modern identity construction, and ideological movements in the Balkans. Publications include foundational works on Spyridon Zambelios and Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos, with critical analyses of Marxist and liberal historiographical influences.
Recent works focus on Byzantine legacy debates, Balkan ethnic integration narratives, and cross-cultural historiographical transfers. He has contributed to academic journals and edited volumes on topics ranging from Choiseul-Gouffier's travelogues to modern Greek-Serbian relations.
