Prof. Konrad Schmid serves as Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Judaism at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where he also completed both his Ph.D. and Habilitation. He currently holds leadership positions as President of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) and president of the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Theologie (Academic Society for Theology) since 2017.
His research focuses on the composition and theological development of the Hebrew Bible, particularly the Pentateuch. Schmid examines how biblical texts were compiled, edited, and interpreted across different historical periods, with special attention to Genesis and Exodus narratives. His work bridges historical-critical methods with theological inquiry, exploring how ancient Israelite religion evolved into Judaism.
His recent scholarship demonstrates consistent focus on biblical redaction history, textual discrepancies in Genesis accounts, and the compositional layers of the Torah. Schmid approaches these topics through both historical analysis and literary criticism, revealing how ancient editors reconciled conflicting traditions.
Scientific Awards:

- ERC Advanced Grant for 'How God Became a Lawgiver' project (2019)
Schmid leads the 'How God Became a Lawgiver' research project (www.divlaw.uzh.ch) funded by the ERC Advanced Grant. In fall 2022, he served as Lady Davis Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, demonstrating his international academic engagement and collaborative research efforts across institutions.
His work connects textual analysis with broader theological questions about the development of biblical law and Israelite religious thought, positioning him at the forefront of contemporary Pentateuchal studies.
