Koen Kuijken is a Professor of Galactic Astronomy at the Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, since 2002. He previously served as Scientific Director (2007–2012) before transitioning to full-time research and teaching. His research focuses on dark matter, dark energy, and gravitational lensing, leveraging telescopes in La Palma, Hawaii, Chile, and space-based instruments like the Hubble and Euclid telescopes. He chairs the NWO Science domain advisory committee for astronomy and collaborates with institutions such as ASTRON and the Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE).
Education includes a PhD from the University of Cambridge (1985–1988), postdoctoral roles at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (1989–1991), and a Hubble Fellowship at Harvard-Smithsonian (1991–1994). He was a faculty member at the Kapteyn Institute, University of Groningen (1994–2002).
Research interests emphasize galactic dynamics, gravitational lensing, and the distribution of dark matter/energy. Key projects include the OmegaCAM wide-field camera and the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph. The KiDS survey (mapping 1350+ square degrees of extragalactic sky) and the Euclid mission (launched 2023) are central to his work, aiming to test cosmological models and explore universe homogeneity.
