Koen Hermans is a Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences at KU Leuven, affiliated with the Centre for Care Research and Consultancy. He serves as head of the Clearinghouse for Self-help and leads the Subdivision LUCAS, Centre for Care Research and Consultancy. He is a member of the L-C&Y - Child & Youth Institute and the Faculty Council of Social Sciences.
His research focuses on social work, homelessness studies, and vulnerable populations. He investigates policy responses to youth homelessness, social networks for care leavers, and accessibility of healthcare. His work often employs mixed-methods approaches and community-based research, with a strong emphasis on social inclusion and urban social issues.
Recent projects include "Bringing human rights home", "CONNECT" (social connections in serious illness), and "Architectures of Caring" for street homelessness. He has also led evaluations of Flemish youth care policies and European homelessness counts.
His publications span journals like Children and Youth Services Review, Urban Planning, and Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless. Topics include youth care transitions, administrative data analysis in homelessness, and community mental health. He is involved in teaching courses such as Kwantitatief leeronderzoek and Analyse en evaluatie van sociale interventies.
