Koen Aesaert serves as a tenure track lecturer at KU Leuven's Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, affiliated with the Unit for Educational Effectiveness and Evaluation. He is an active member of both the LC&Y - KU Leuven Institute for Child and Youth and the LIVO – KU Leuven Institute for Educational Research, contributing to institutional governance through multiple Program and Educational Councils (POCs) including the PPW Faculty Council and councils for Educational Sciences programs.
His research centers on educational effectiveness and evaluation, with core expertise in value-added modeling stability, differential effectiveness metrics, and large-scale assessment methodologies. He investigates factors influencing student outcomes across reading literacy (PIRLS), mathematics/science (TIMSS), and early childhood development (IELS), with growing emphasis on inclusive education for students with special needs and home literacy environment impacts.
Recent publications reveal strong engagement in international comparative studies, particularly examining school-level factors in digital literacy development and value-added model reliability. His work consistently bridges large-scale assessment data with practical classroom applications, focusing on Flanders' educational context while maintaining global relevance through OECD and IEA collaborations.
Aesaert co-supervises doctoral research, notably guiding Delafontaine, J.'s thesis on teaching methodologies for students with special educational needs. He leads multiple major projects including TIMSS 2027 (as promotor), PIRLS 2026 implementation, and longitudinal studies on value-added models, with funding extending through 2029. His advisory role extends to curriculum development through active participation in educational councils.
Within KU Leuven's research ecosystem, he contributes to the LC&Y and LIVO institutes while teaching specialized courses in educational effectiveness and socially engaged learning. His current projects demonstrate sustained leadership in educational measurement, particularly through Flemish implementation of international studies and methodological refinements in value-added modeling.
