Prof. Koen Frenken is a Full Professor in Innovation Studies at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, part of the Faculty of Geosciences. His research focuses on radical innovation, economic geography, platform economy, and innovation policy. He holds a joint PhD from the University of Grenoble and the University of Amsterdam (2001).
He leads the NWO-funded PlatWork-r project on regulating platform work and contributes to initiatives like the INTRANSIT center for innovation policy. His work addresses sustainability transitions, digital society challenges, and institutional complexity in innovation systems. He actively engages in policy debates, such as platform economy regulation and open science reforms. Frenken collaborates with global networks like the Sustainability Transitions Research Network (STRN) and frequently publishes in top journals across innovation studies and economic geography.
