Prof. Kodimangalam Ravichandran holds academic roles as a Professor at the University of Virginia (since 1996), Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Cancer Biology (since 2010), and Director of the Center for Cell Clearance (since 2008). He is also a VIB Group Leader at the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research (since 2017). His research focuses on cell clearance mechanisms in health and disease, particularly the engulfment of apoptotic cells and its anti-inflammatory consequences. He uses mouse and rat models to study signaling pathways, phagocytosis, and metabolite-driven tissue repair.
Education:
- PhD in Immunology, University of Massachusetts Amherst (1992)
- Postdoctoral Training at Harvard Medical School (1992–1996)
Research Interests:
- Apoptotic cell clearance and its role in inflammation/autoimmunity
- Find-me/eat-me signals (e.g., ATP/UTP, phosphatidylserine)
- BAI1 receptor signaling and cytoskeletal rearrangements
- Metabolic adaptations during phagocytosis
- Pyroptosis-driven tissue repair (recent breakthroughs)
Advising & Labs:
- PhD Students: Hannah De Cleene, Laura Boeckaerts
