Dr. Iwan Robert Evans is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield. He holds affiliations with the Bateson Centre and collaborates with labs such as the Zeidler, Prince, and Johnston Labs to translate findings into vertebrate systems.
- University of Oxford (MBiochem)
- University College London (PhD, MRC Molecular Cell Biology Program)
Dr. Evans' research focuses on macrophage biology, particularly how apoptotic cell clearance regulates inflammatory responses, cell migration, and immune homeostasis. His lab employs Drosophila melanogaster as a genetically tractable model to dissect molecular mechanisms underlying innate immune regulation, phagocytosis, and developmental dispersal of immune cells.
Key trends in his publications include macrophage heterogeneity, apoptosis-immune crosstalk, EGF signaling, and actin dynamics. These works often bridge developmental biology and immunopathology, with implications for autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, and cancer.
Scientific Awards:
- Thomas-Berry and Simpson Fellowship (2013)
- Sir Henry Dale Fellowship (Wellcome/Royal Society, 2014)
- Early Career Researcher Award (University of Sheffield, 2014)
Dr. Evans mentors PhD and Masters students, including Elliot Brooks, Olivier Tardy, and Jonny Coates. His lab has secured funding from BBSRC, Dunhill Medical Trust, and MRC DiMeN DTP. He also leads outreach initiatives like the Microarmy vs Disease program and co-founded the Fellows and Beyond (FAB) Network.
