Klaus Schmierer is a Professor of Neurology at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London, and Consultant Neurologist at The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, where he serves as Research Lead for Neurology, Clinical Lead of the Day Case Unit, and head of BartsMS.
His academic journey began with undergraduate studies in Berlin and Jerusalem, followed by neurology training at Charité Hospital (Humboldt University Berlin). He holds an MB BS, PhD, and FRCP, and completed a Wellcome Intermediate Clinical Fellowship at UCL Institute of Neurology.
Professor Schmierer's research centers on multiple sclerosis pathogenesis, with emphasis on inflammatory demyelination, MRI-based disease monitoring, and therapeutic interventions. His work integrates quantitative histology with advanced imaging to elucidate disease mechanisms and improve diagnostic precision, advocating proactive treatment strategies across all MS stages.
Recent publications reveal a dominant focus on cladribine therapy efficacy (MAGNIFY-MS), diagnostic innovations like the central vein sign, and social determinants of MS outcomes. Emerging themes include advanced MS trials (ChariotMS), neurodegeneration biomarkers, and MS-infectious disease interactions.
Key recognition includes:
- Wellcome Intermediate Clinical Fellow
He mentors MSc/PhD students and directs major funded initiatives:
- HEFCE, Wellcome Trust, and Barts Charity grants for MRI-pathology correlation studies
- UK/US MS Society funding for epidemiological research via BartsMS Database
- NIHR and MRC support for clinical trials including ChariotMS
- Pharmaceutical industry collaborations on cladribine mechanism studies
As leader of the BartsMS research group, he drives translational projects from bench to bedside, notably the ChariotMS trial for advanced MS and MAGNIFY-MS mechanistic substudies, while advising regulatory bodies (EMA, MHRA, NICE) on MS therapeutics.
