Prof. Klaus Schäfer is Professor of Urban Planning and Design at the School of Architecture, Bremen University of Applied Sciences (HSB), based in room AB, 403 at Neustadtswall 30, 28199 Bremen. His work centers on the city as a dynamic space where human interactions shape and are shaped by planning decisions, architectural forms, and the organization of public/private realms.
His research critically examines contemporary urban challenges through projects like Haifa/Bremen Urban Cities 2030 (2020-2023), which analyzed density, social mixture, and technology integration in future cities, and Departure from the Zwischenstadt (2017-2018), addressing evolving urban typologies. These initiatives highlight his focus on how design reflects societal values and transforms lived environments.
The School of Architecture demonstrates applied research through recent activities: HSB civil engineers conducted Weser Bridge load tests (September 2025), the summer exhibition showcased student work (August 2025), and an emissions-free cargo bike was deployed for the mobile DesignBuild laboratory, emphasizing sustainable construction practices directly relevant to Prof. Schäfer's urban design ethos.
