Klaus Pietschmann is a Professor of Musicology at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz since 2009, where he also serves as Director of the Institut für Musikwissenschaft. His academic career spans institutions in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy, with roles including Assistant Professor at the University of Berne and visiting positions at Harvard University and Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz.

- Habilitation in Musicology (University of Zürich, 2006)
His research focuses on interdisciplinary intersections of music, liturgy, and cultural history across Europe from the 15th to 19th centuries. Key areas include the evolution of operatic traditions, sensory experiences in music, and regional cultural identities in the Rhineland, Switzerland, and Mexico. Current projects involve critical editions of Gluck's works and cataloging musical sources through the Mainz Academy of Sciences.
Scientific accolades include the Göttinger Akademiepreis für Geisteswissenschaften (2008) and a five-year fellowship from the Gutenberg Research Council (2018-2022). He has held prestigious fellowships at Villa I Tatti (Florence) and the Deutsches Historisches Institut (Rome).
