Klaus Pietschmann is a Professor and Director of the Institute of Musicology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since 2009. He specializes in music-liturgical interactions during the 15th-16th centuries, opera history, Italian Renaissance music, sensory history, and regional music cultures spanning the Rhineland, Switzerland, and Mexico.

His research explores music's role in religious rituals, the evolution of opera as a political and cultural medium, and the interplay between music and sensory experiences across different historical contexts. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of regional music traditions in Europe and Latin America.
Recent publications focus on 15th-18th century music institutions, court liturgy, and cross-cultural reception studies. His work bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches to sensory history and media representation.
