Dr Klaus Fütterer is a Professor and Reader in Structural Biology at the School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham. He holds a PhD in Crystallography from TU Berlin and conducted postdoctoral research at the Australian National University and Washington University in St. Louis. He joined the University of Birmingham in 2000, where he teaches structural biology modules in BSc Biochemistry courses and serves as Admissions Tutor for undergraduate Biosciences programs.
His research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of cell wall synthesis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, using X-ray crystallography to study glycosyltransferases involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis. This work aims to identify novel drug targets for tuberculosis treatment. His group investigates enzymes such as DprE1 and EmbC, emphasizing their roles in pathogenicity and therapeutic intervention.
Dr Fütterer’s contributions include structural insights into enzyme-inhibitor complexes and collaborations with global researchers to advance anti-TB drug discovery. His expertise bridges structural biology and microbiology, with a focus on combating infectious diseases through molecular-level understanding.
