Kit McCullough

Kit McCullough is a Teaching Professor in Architecture at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Her work focuses on equitable urban design, sustainable development, and community-driven planning. She teaches courses on urban design, real estate development, and transportation economics, and leads design studios addressing housing and neighborhood development.

Education: Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin (1980s), Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University (1990s).

Research interests emphasize socially just development, healthy environments, and regional economic strategies. Notable projects include the C.S. Mott Foundation’s downtown Flint redevelopment plan, Tucson’s sustainability strategies, and eco-industry corridor plans in Oklahoma City. She advocates for urban policies that prioritize wellbeing and happiness.

Prior to U-M, she led urban design projects at Urban Design Associates in Pittsburgh, including revitalization efforts in Washington, DC; Norfolk, VA; and Shaker Heights, OH. Earlier roles include practice with Duany Plater-Zyberk in Miami and Austin, TX.

Professional Experience: Over 30 years in urban design consulting, with expertise in HOPE VI housing projects, master planning, and mixed-use development. Recent media engagements include discussions on post-COVID urban spaces and Detroit development for Michigan Radio.
