Dr Kirsty Devaney is a Lecturer in Music Education at the Royal College of Music (RCM), specializing in composition pedagogy and equity issues. She holds a PhD from Birmingham City University (2018) and has been active in music education for over a decade, founding the Young Composers Project at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Her research focuses on dismantling barriers to composing, gender equality, and socio-economic access in music education. Notable recognitions include the BERA Anna Craft Award and honorary conservatoire membership.
Education: PhD in Music Education (2018), Birmingham City University; BMus from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (with Principal’s Award). Research interests include creative practices in schools, EDI in music education, and collaborative composing with non-professional musicians. She has published extensively in journals like Music Education Research and British Journal of Music Education, and co-edited the 2024 Routledge Companion to Teaching Music Composition in Schools.
