Dr. Kimya Loder is an Assistant Professor in the School of History and Sociology at the Georgia Institute of Technology, affiliated with the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Stanford University, with a focus on race, gender, and sexuality-based inequality. Her research examines resistance strategies among marginalized groups, particularly Black transgender women in the U.S. South and Black residents in gentrifying urban areas. She employs qualitative methods to study self-determination, social movements, and organizational survival in volatile environments.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology (Stanford University), B.A. in Sociology and International Studies (Spelman College). Key areas of expertise include Political Sociology, Race and Ethnicity, and Social Movements.
Her work has been published in Qualitative Sociology and Urban Studies. She actively engages in community-based research, program management, and design thinking to address social inequities. Current projects focus on the resilience of Black-led organizations in the Southern U.S. and strategies for civic engagement amid systemic exclusion.
