Dr. Kimon Christanis serves as a Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Patras, Faculty of Science. His academic career spans decades of research and teaching in specialized geological fields related to organic materials. He maintains regular office hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for student consultation.
His educational background includes a Diploma from NTU Athens and a PhD from Braunschweig, Germany, establishing a strong foundation for his expertise in geological sciences.
Professor Christanis specializes in Peat/Coal Geology and Organic Petrology, with significant research focus on environmental impacts from peat and coal utilization as well as non-energy applications of these materials. His work bridges traditional geological studies with contemporary environmental concerns, particularly examining how organic materials interact with ecosystems and human activities.
An analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on paleoenvironmental reconstruction, coal formation processes across different geological periods and regions (including Nigeria, Turkey, Greece, and Southeast Asia), and the application of organic petrology to environmental and energy challenges. His research increasingly addresses contemporary issues like energy transition, climate impacts on biomes, and practical applications of geological knowledge to public awareness.
Professor Christanis teaches several key courses including GEO_045 Energy Sources, GEO_061E Coal Geology, GEO_075 Geothermal Energy, GEO_611 Seminar on scientific and CV writing, and GE_EM02 Environmental impacts from exploitation of earth materials – Rehabilitation of landscape and the environment. His teaching reflects his research interests, connecting theoretical knowledge with practical environmental applications.
His research extends across multiple continents, with significant fieldwork in Greece (particularly the Philippi Peatland), Nigeria, Turkey, Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean region. This global perspective enriches both his research output and teaching methodology.
