Jerome Whitington is Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU's Gallatin School, specializing in anthropological approaches to climate change, water governance, and energy transitions. His research examines how environmental knowledge is produced and contested in Southeast Asia and Appalachia, with theoretical focus on uncertainty, infrastructure, and planetary-scale thinking.
Research explores three interconnected themes: hydropower development in Laos, carbon market formation in Thailand, and coal-to-solar transitions in Appalachia. His work combines ethnographic methods with critical analysis of environmental governance and technical systems.
Recent publications address geological agency in planetary thought, post-globalization ethnography, and hydropower uncertainty production. Thematically, his scholarship consistently examines how environmental futures are imagined, calculated, and materialized through socio-technical practices.
Current research investigates the cultural dimensions of energy transition in former coal-mining communities through place-making practices and economic reconfiguration.
