Kimberly Mullane is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Natural Science at Hawaii Pacific University (HPU), within the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and her A.B. in Chemistry from Bryn Mawr College. Her work bridges cutting-edge research in inorganic synthesis and sustainable metal applications with innovative pedagogical practices in chemistry education.

Her research program focuses on the synthesis and characterization of early transition metal and rare earth element complexes. Students in her lab engage in ligand synthesis, NMR and optical spectroscopy, electrochemical measurements, and photochemical reactions. These efforts support two primary goals: developing novel methods for metal separation in recycling (e.g., for nuclear reactors, wind turbines, and LEDs) and exploring photocatalytic capabilities of group (IV) and lanthanide complexes. She also contributes significantly to chemical education through Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL), authoring guided-inquiry activities and studying active learning strategies in undergraduate chemistry classrooms.
She teaches a comprehensive suite of chemistry courses including General Chemistry I & II (and labs), Physical Chemistry I & II (and lab), Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Analysis Lab, and Inorganic Chemistry. The Mullane Research Group recently relocated from the Philadelphia area to Honolulu in Fall 2024, continuing its work with undergraduate researchers. Students such as Kaesha, Jayanne, Kelina, and Delaney have been awarded positions through the INBRE program, highlighting the group's research engagement and funding success.
