Dr. Kimberly Meltzer Weisman is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at George Mason University. She previously served as Director of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, founding Co-Director of the Marymount Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication, and faculty advisor to the student newspaper at Marymount University. She holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Emory University, and M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, alongside a certificate from the Media Law and Policy Global Foundation Programme at Oxford University.
Her research focuses on journalistic adaptation to societal changes, political communication, and strategic communication. Notable works include examining the use of 'alt-right' discourse (2022), the expansion of opinion journalism in the U.S. (2019), and journalistic communities of practice (2017). Her first book (2010) explored TV news anchors and technological adaptation.
Dr. Meltzer’s awards include the 2020 College Media Association Honor Roll Adviser Award. She actively contributes to initiatives like the HSI Solutions Journalism Educator Academy and the National Institute for Civil Discourse's Faculty Research Network. Her academic affiliations include the Center for Climate Change Communication and the Character Assassination & Reputation Politics research group at GMU.
