Kimberly Gallagher is a Professor and Chair of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences, leading the Department of Biology. She holds a B.A. from Barnard College and a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego.
Her research focuses on intercellular protein trafficking mechanisms in plants, particularly the movement of the SHORT-ROOT (SHR) transcription factor in Arabidopsis roots. This work bridges plant and animal systems, revealing conserved trafficking pathways linked to developmental processes and disease. Her lab employs cell biology, genomics, and pharmacological approaches to dissect signaling pathways involved in organ patterning and cell-type specification.
Key Contributions:
- Discovered SHR's dynamic movement regulation and its nuclear localization dependency
- Identified callose biosynthesis's role in symplastic trafficking barriers
- Characterized microtubule requirements for SHR mobility
Teaching includes BIOL 221 (Molecular Biology and Genetics) and BIOL 526 (Experimental Methods in Molecular and Cell Biology). Awards include multiple Faculty 1000 selections and featured coverage in Science Daily.
Her lab collaborates on projects involving chromatin remodeling ATPases and cereal root complexity, with implications for agricultural biotechnology and developmental biology.
