Zonglie Hong is Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Idaho's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. He teaches biochemistry and plant biochemistry courses, with research spanning biochemistry, cell biology, genetics and genomics. His work focuses on cell wall biosynthesis, flower/seed development, and biological nitrogen fixation using model plants and crops including wheat, barley, rice, Lotus japonicas and Arabidopsis.
Research areas:
- Biochemical pathways of callose and hemicellulose biosynthesis
- Genetic regulation of flower and grain formation
- Signaling mechanisms in root nodule development
- Plant cell wall architecture and function
Hong's publications reveal consistent focus on plant developmental biology, with recent emphasis on tomato gene regulation, chloroplast development, and CRISPR-based genetic engineering. His work integrates molecular biology techniques with biochemical characterization of plant systems.
