Kim Pate is a Canadian Senator appointed in 2016 and a nationally renowned advocate with 35 years of experience in the legal and penal systems, focusing on marginalized and imprisoned individuals. She served as Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies (CAEFS) from 1992 to 2016 and held the Sallows Chair in Human Rights at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law during 2014-2015.
Her educational background includes a law degree with honours in the Clinical Law Programme from Dalhousie Law School in 1984. Senator Pate developed and taught courses on Prison Law, Human Rights and Social Justice, and Defending Battered Women on Trial at law faculties across Canada, establishing her expertise in systemic legal reform.
Her research and advocacy concentrate on Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, Prison Reform, Gender and Law, and Social Justice. She was the driving force behind the landmark Inquiry into Certain Events at the Prison for Women in Kingston, where she supported incarcerated women in sharing their experiences and served as a critical witness.
