Dr. Kim Jones is an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering at McMaster University and Chair of the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering (ONWiE). She leads provincial-wide initiatives to increase diversity in engineering education while conducting research at the intersection of biomedical engineering and inclusion science.
- B.A.Sc. Chemical Engineering, University of Waterloo (1995)
- M.Sc. Biology, University of Guelph (1998)
- Ph.D. Chemical Engineering, University of Toronto (2003)
Her research spans two primary domains: biomedical engineering investigations of host responses to biomaterials (inflammation, fibrosis, adaptive immunity) and engineering education research focusing on gender equity, intersectional identities, and inclusive teamwork practices. Current projects examine how intersecting identities (gender, race, immigrant status, sexual orientation, ability) influence engineering experiences, while past work addressed immune responses to biomaterials and tissue engineering challenges.
Google Scholar publications reveal a 20-year research trajectory transitioning from biomaterials immunology (1997-2004) to social inclusion studies (2019-present). Key themes include stress responses in engineering teams, feminist interventions in STEM, and systemic equity barriers in graduate programs.
- Engineers Canada 30×30 Champion
- Hamilton-Halton Engineer of the Year
- YWCA Women of Distinction Award (2024)
Dr. Jones teaches CHEM ENG 3BK3 (Bio-Reaction Engineering) and ENGINEER 2IW3 (Inclusion in the Engineering Workplace). She has led initiatives like Go CODE Girl to inspire young women in technology careers, participated in EtE-25 funding projects for engineering education innovation, and contributed to national conversations on equity in STEM fields.
