Kilian Stobaeus (1690–1742) was a prominent Swedish academic and physician, serving as Professor of Natural Philosophy and Experimental Physics (1728) and later Professor of History (1732) at Lund University. He was the first individual in Sweden to earn a doctorate of medicine (1721). His contributions to academia included establishing the Museum Stobaeanum (1735), a foundational institution for Lund University's natural history and archaeological collections.
Education: Studied under Johan Jacob Döbelius, earning Sweden’s first medical doctorate in 1721.
Research & Legacy: Stobaeus emphasized empirical observation and amassed extensive collections of biological, geological, and historical specimens. His mentorship of Carl von Linné (Linnaeus) profoundly influenced the father of modern taxonomy, providing Linnaeus with lodging, free education, and access to his 1,700-volume library. Linnaeus later praised Stobaeus as a paternal figure.
Clinical Work: Offered free medical care to the poor from his private laboratory and promoted Ramlösa spring as a health spa. Despite personal ailments like migraines, he championed public health initiatives.
Museums & Collections: His Museum Stobaeanum became a cornerstone for Lund University’s natural history studies, preserving specimens still used in research today.
