Kiliaan van Wees

Kiliaan van Wees is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Liability Law. He also serves as the director of the Bachelor of Laws program since 2023. His research focuses on intersections between law and technology (particularly autonomous vehicles) and improving victims' positions in liability law through interdisciplinary and empirical approaches.

Education: Studied Dutch Law at University of Amsterdam. Previously affiliated with Delft University of Technology (2004 PhD on legal aspects of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Teaching includes courses on Contract Law, Tort Law, Consumer Law, Law & Governance, and Ethics of AI/Robots. Supervises bachelor and master theses.

Recent publications address civil liability frameworks for autonomous vehicles, evaluation of bereavement damages legislation, and future-proof product liability directives. Collaborates internationally on regulatory gaps in traffic law and compensation systems.

Labs/Teams: Active in A-LAB and the interdisciplinary Law, Markets and Behavior research group. Engages in public lectures and expert meetings on autonomous transport modalities and legal challenges in tech-driven sectors.
