Kiersten M. Maryott serves as Clinical Associate Professor of Business Administration in the Department of Marketing at the University of Pittsburgh's Katz School of Business, where she has taught since 2009. Her responsibilities include coordinating the Introduction to Marketing course, mentoring PhD students in teaching, managing marketing course schedules, and advising the Pitt chapter of the American Marketing Association. Previously, she held teaching positions at the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Central Florida.
Dr. Maryott earned her PhD in Business Administration from Duke University and dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Marketing and Psychology from Virginia Tech, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her academic credentials include membership in Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Sigma Pi honor societies.
Her research program spans two interconnected domains: pedagogical investigations into experience-based learning (EBL) as an educational enhancement tool, and theoretical consumer behavior studies examining trust, credibility, and consumer welfare impacts. A secondary research focus analyzes service failure and recovery mechanisms and their consequences for customer loyalty. This dual approach bridges classroom innovation with fundamental consumer insights.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a pronounced shift toward adapting experiential learning methodologies for remote and hybrid educational environments, particularly evident in her 2020-2022 pandemic-response research. Concurrently, her consumer behavior work maintains strong emphasis on service recovery dynamics, with increasing attention to cross-cultural applications and digital contexts.
Dr. Maryott's scholarly contributions have been recognized through significant honors including:
- Election as Fellow of the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning (ABSEL)
- Tilburg University TIAS PhD Summer Scholarship
- Multiple best paper awards and nominations at ABSEL conferences (2017-2022)
As an educator, she advises undergraduate marketing interns and mentors PhD candidates in pedagogical development. Her institutional leadership includes service on Pitt Business's Undergraduate Program Committee, Experience-Based Learning Committee, Assurance of Learning Committee, and multiple faculty search committees. She has received internal funding for curriculum innovation initiatives focused on experiential learning integration.
Dr. Maryott maintains deep engagement with the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning (ABSEL), currently serving as Treasurer and Local Arrangements Chair after progressing through all executive roles including President. She spearheads the Katz School's experiential learning taskforce and strategic partnerships development, establishing it as a nationally recognized EBL implementation model.
