Kiera Staley is a Research Fellow at the Centre of Sport & Social Impact at La Trobe University. She specializes in large-scale complex project evaluations involving multiple years, stakeholders, methods of data collection, and reporting levels. Her work bridges academic research with industry applications, focusing on evidence-based decision making in sport contexts while ensuring the unique context of sport is understood by organizations and government.
Ms Staley holds a Master of Business (MBus), Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (GCHEd), and Bachelor of Business (Honors) (BBus(Hons)), all from La Trobe University. Her academic background combines business education with sport management expertise.
Her research focuses on physical activity, injury prevention and management, community sport, sport participant engagement, and healthy sports clubs. She has developed expertise in large-scale project evaluations, particularly in the areas of gender equity in sport, injury impacts on participation, and the social value of sport. Her current projects investigate the impact of injury in community sport, developing evidence for surfers' role in coastal safety, and supporting sports organizations receiving VicHealth grants.
Ms Staley's research demonstrates a strong practical orientation with significant real-world impact. Her work frequently addresses gender equity in sport, injury prevention among physically inactive populations, and community sport development. She employs diverse methodologies including concept mapping and multi-method evaluations to generate actionable insights for sport organizations, government bodies, and community clubs.
She has extensive collaboration experience with Golf Australia, VicSport, Victorian Health Promotion Foundation, Surfing Victoria, Rugby Australia, and various community sport clubs. Her professional activities include presentations on attracting women and girls into golf, returning from COVID-19 in community sport, and gender equity in sport.
Prior to her current research role, Ms Staley taught in La Trobe University's MBA, MIB, and Bachelor of Business - Sport Management programs. She also has over 10 years of experience working in and consulting for Local Government in Recreation and Leisure, with specific expertise in Recreation Planning, Sport Development, and Capital Works.
