Dr. Andrea Bruder is a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy and Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre (LASEM) at La Trobe University. She has been with La Trobe University since July 2008, holding appointments in both teaching and research capacities. Her work focuses on musculoskeletal injury prevention, with particular emphasis on gender disparities in injury risk and outcomes.
Dr. Bruder's educational background includes:
- Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Curriculum, Teaching and Learning from La Trobe University (2018-2021)
- PhD from La Trobe University, awarded the Nancy Millis Medal for exceptional quality (2009-2018)
- Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Hons) from La Trobe University (2001-2004)
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement) from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (2003-2009)
Her research program centers on reducing musculoskeletal injury to optimize health and well-being, with specific interests in primary and secondary prevention of knee osteoarthritis, gender disparity in musculoskeletal injury risk and burden, reducing anterior cruciate ligament injury risk among women and girls, and improving outcomes after distal radius fractures. Dr. Bruder employs diverse methodologies including co-design, end-user engagement, qualitative research, process evaluation, clinical trials, and systematic reviews.
Analysis of Dr. Bruder's recent publications reveals a strong focus on gender-specific approaches to sports medicine, particularly concerning women's health in athletic contexts. Her work increasingly emphasizes co-creation with end-users, implementation science, and translating research into practical injury prevention programs. There's a clear trajectory toward addressing systemic issues in sports medicine, particularly regarding gender disparities in injury risk, treatment, and outcomes.
Dr. Bruder has received significant recognition for her work:
- Nancy Millis Medal for completing a PhD thesis of exceptionally high quality (2018)
- 2019 Pro-Vice-Chancellor, College of Science, Health and Engineering Teaching Award
- Vice-Chancellor Teaching Award for 'Learning to look after yourself. Transforming Physiotherapy curricula through meaningful activities that promote health and well-being'
- 2023 La Trobe ECR of the Year
- 2024 ECR Best Paper at the Australia and New Zealand Musculoskeletal Clinical Trials Network
Dr. Bruder has been highly successful in securing research funding, including:
- 2024 NHMRC Partnerships grant (> $2 million) with Government of Western Australia and WA Police Force to improve health and performance in police recruits
- 2024 NHMRC HERknee Centre of Research Excellence ($3 million) to tackle knee injury and arthritis burden for women
- Co-creating new solutions to reduce knee OA burden for young women (ANZMUSC seeding grant, 2024)
- TRAIL W project promoting women runner's health (Medibank Health Research Fund, 2024-2025)
She has supervised 1 PhD student to completion and currently supervises 3 PhD students, 1 Masters and two Honours students. Dr. Bruder was the clinical coordinator of a collaborative study with the Australian Football League to develop the Prep-to-Play PRO injury prevention program for elite women's Australian Rules Football (AFLW).
Dr. Bruder is actively involved in several professional organizations:
- Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) Early Career Investigator (elected 2025)
