Kieko Matteson is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of History at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her work focuses on Environmental History, France, and Europe, particularly the intersection of conservation, community, and conflict in historical contexts. She holds degrees from Smith College (A.B., 1990) and Yale University (MA 1995; PhD 2008).
Her research explores natural resource conservation and land use in Europe, with a focus on Revolutionary France. Notable works include Forests in Revolutionary France: Conservation, Community, and Conflict 1669-1848 (Cambridge UP, 2015) and articles analyzing environmental policy and cultural history. She has served as Executive Director of the World History Association and editor for the American Society for Environmental History.
Publications span environmental historiography, legal history, and ecological resilience, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach. Awards include the Gargan Prize (2006) for her groundbreaking article on 19th-century France. Matteson has also been a Rachel Carson Center Fellow (2013) and contributed to U.S. Park Service historical projects.
Teaching includes courses on U.S. and World Environmental History, Modern France, and Historiography. She actively promotes environmental documentation through initiatives like the Environmental Center Project with the Water Resources Research Center.
