Khaled El Masry serves as an Assistant Professor at Augusta University with primary appointment in the Dental College of Georgia (Department of Oral Biology and Diagnostic Sciences) and secondary affiliation in the Medical College of Georgia (Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy). His academic base centers at the Dental College where he maintains laboratory space (CL-3006) and teaches across multiple biomedical programs.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Cell Biology and Anatomy from Augusta University (2018)
Dr. El Masry's research program investigates molecular mechanisms of diabetic retinopathy, with particular emphasis on endothelial-derived exosomes, microRNA regulation, and BMP pathway signaling. His work bridges ophthalmology, cell biology, and diabetes research to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for vision-threatening complications. Current projects examine lipid-mediated vascular dysfunction and nanovesicle-based diagnostic approaches.
Analysis of his 2023-2024 publications reveals consistent focus on diabetic retinopathy pathogenesis, with emerging exploration of infectious disease interactions (toxoplasmosis/COVID-19). His work demonstrates strong translational potential through nanomedicine applications and molecular pathway characterization.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with:
- New Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (The Dental College of Georgia, 2024)
- Vision Discovery Institute Award of Excellence in Vision Research (2018)
- 3 Minutes Thesis Finalist, People’s Choice Award (2018)
- Multiple Graduate School Travel Awards (2017-2018)
Dr. El Masry actively contributes to academic service as a reviewer for Scientific Reports, Frontiers, Experimental Eye Research, and ARVO, while coordinating the 2024 ARVO program. His teaching portfolio spans 9 graduate courses including Bioclinical Seminars, Craniofacial Complex, and systems-based biomedical curricula (Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Nervous Systems).
Associated with Augusta University's Vision Discovery Institute, his research operates at the intersection of dental and medical sciences with potential applications in early diabetic complication detection and targeted therapeutic development.
