Kevin Mumford is a Professor of History at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on race, politics, and sexuality in modern America, with a particular emphasis on how social difference and belonging shaped urban environments and institutions. He is also engaged in public history, exploring how historians can address societal issues beyond academia.
Education: B.A. (University of Wisconsin-Madison), M.A. and Ph.D. (Stanford University).
Research Interests: Race relations, African American history, history of sexuality, urban studies, and the methodologies of biography and public history. He has written extensively on topics such as Black queer activism, intersections of race and sexuality in urban spaces, and the historiography of social movements.
Awards and Grants: Recipient of the Binkley-Stephenson Award and Audre Lorde Prize, as well as grants including the Fulbright Senior Scholar (2011), Warren Center Fellowship (2008), and Schomburg NEH Award (2005).
Teaching: Courses include 'Problems in African American History,' 'Constructions of Race,' and 'Postwar America.' He has also contributed to interdisciplinary initiatives through editorial work and public scholarship.
