Kevin Mganga

Dr. Kevin Mganga serves as a Junior Assistant Professor in the Environmental Sciences department at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. His work focuses on the intersection of rangelands ecology and soil science, with particular emphasis on sustainable land management practices in semi-arid regions of Africa, particularly Kenya.

Dr. Mganga's research spans several key areas including Restoration Ecology, Soil Science, Sustainable Agriculture, Plant Ecology, and Ecohydrology. His work specifically addresses plant-soil interactions, soil carbon cycling and sequestration, land use change impacts, and ecological restoration in both agricultural and natural ecosystems. He investigates nature-based solutions using perennial grasses native to African rangelands to combat land degradation, desertification, climate change, and biodiversity loss. His research integrates both basic and applied approaches to develop practical solutions for sustainable land management.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on soil health and sustainable land management, particularly in semi-arid regions. Much of his work examines the interplay between soil properties, microbial communities, and land management practices. A significant portion of his research addresses challenges in African drylands, with Kenya serving as a primary study area. His work often involves field studies examining the effectiveness of in-situ rainwater harvesting and seed-based ecological restoration techniques using native perennial grasses.
