Kevin McIver is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also affiliated with the Maryland Pathogen Research Institute. His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly the molecular mechanisms of Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) and other Gram-positive pathogens. His work is supported by the NIH/NIAID. McIver holds a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center and completed postdoctoral training at Emory University. He has held roles at UT Southwestern Medical Center and has been at UMD since 2006, becoming Chair in 2022.
Education: Ph.D. (1994), Postdoc (1994–1999), Assistant Professor (1999–2006), Associate Professor (2006–2012), Full Professor (2012–present), Chair (2022–present).
Research Interests: GAS pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, gene regulation, and metabolic adaptations in bacterial infections. His lab uses genomic, genetic, and animal models to study virulence factors, including Mga and RofA regulators, and their roles in infection.
Key Findings: Discovered PRD-containing virulence regulators (PCVRs), linked carbohydrate metabolism to virulence, and identified essential genes in GAS.
